This paper explores the role of the education system in shaping environmental awareness and transforming consumer habits among the population of Bosnia and Herzegovina within the framework of the global transition toward a green economy. Confronted with the ecological crisis, climate change, and environmental degradation, modern societies require a fundamental change in values and behavior, with education playing a key role in this process. By analyzing the current state of the education system in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the paper identifies the main shortcomings in integrating environmental
content into curricula, as well as the limited competencies of teaching staff to implement the goals of education for sustainable development. The paper offers models and strategies for improving environmental education at all levels of education from preschool to higher education as well as through non-formal adult learning programs. Special emphasis is placed on the development of critical thinking, the practical application of ecological principles, and the active involvement of local communities in the educational process. The results of the analysis indicate that systematic and well-designed environmental education programs can significantly contribute to changing consumer habits, reducing waste, increasing recycling, and embracing the principles of a circular economy. Finally, the paper proposes measures for developing a national strategy for environmental education as the foundation for a long-term societal transformation toward sustainable development.
