Currently, 99% of the world’s population lives in areas with polluted air. Every year, during the winter period, the media list Sarajevo as one of the most polluted cities in the world. Pollution caused by suspended particles PM10 and PM2.5 is dominant during the winter months, and during temperature inversions, pollutants accumulate and concentrate, leading to
multiple exceedances of limit values. In addition to PM particles, excessive levels of SO₂, O₃, and other pollutants occasionally occur. The main sources of these emissions are household heating and traffic. Exposure to PM2.5 particles is particularly dangerous to human health, as these fine particles can penetrate deep into the lungs and bloodstream due to their small size. Polluted air causes diseases such as lower respiratory tract infections, bronchitis, asthma, cancer of the trachea, bronchi and lungs, ischemic heart disease, stroke, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The aim of this paper is to investigate and present ambient air pollution in Sarajevo, analyze the types of pollutants based on available data, and illustrate their impact on human health.
