Given that the information and technological revolution has exponentially increased the use of new electronic equipment, a rapid accumulation of large quantities of obsolete devices has occurred. As a result, e-waste is now one of the fastest-growing types of waste. Globally, ewaste accounts for more than 5% of all waste, and its volume continues to grow in parallel with the rising sales of electronic products in developing countries. Electrical and electronic waste — typically consisting of old and malfunctioning mobile phones, refrigerators, televisions, computers, and similar devices — represents one of the more serious environmental challenges in the European Union. For example, in 2005, EU member states generated around 9 million tonnes of such waste, while estimates suggest that by 2020 this figure increased to approximately 12 million tonnes annually.
