Abstract

Bosnia and Herzegovina faces challenges regarding the sustainable use of natural resources and efficient waste management. In 2023, the average resident consumed approximately 10.3 tons of natural resources, or 28 kilograms per day, while total environmental protection expenditures in 2024 amounted to BAM 320.13 million, with the largest share directed towards waste management and wastewater treatment. In the same year, the total amount of processed and disposed waste reached 656,248 tons, and 1.1 million tons of municipal waste were generated, of which 79.2% originated from households. More than 99% of waste ends up in landfills, highlighting the need to transition to more sustainable disposal models. Biodegradable waste can be converted into valuable organic fertilizer through composting, reducing the use of synthetic inputs and promoting ecological balance. Furthermore, energy from waste can be obtained through processes such as incineration or biological conversion, thereby reducing emissions and providing an alternative energy source. In this context, the green economy plays a special role, as it involves the development of economic activities that
contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, increasing energy efficiency, and conserving natural resources, while simultaneously promoting employment and social inclusion
